160 Year-Old First Baptist Church Finalizes "Earth Month 2010"

Historic First Baptist Church, founded in downtown Austin in 1847, concludes a month of celebrations and explorations of God's creation this Sunday, with an hour long worship service.

The worship service will feature special musical performances by Grant Hudson, Reverend Ann Pittman, the First Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir, Louise Avant, Cantamos and Twang Twang Shock-a-boom.

Instead of a traditional sermon, congregation members will be treated to two, shorter meditations by pastor Dr. Roger Paynter and a participatory walk to the church's northeast park, where all will gather under a 300 hundred year old oak tree.

Once outdoors the worship will continue with colorful pinwheels created by First Baptist children, wildflower seed giveaways, and a program led by First Baptist Church's Environmental Action Team.

Additionally, First Baptist will feature the final class of month long series, "The Journey of Environmental Stewardship." Session 4 focuses on Air Pollution and Emissions. I will give a quick overview of how today's air emissions are affecting Texans' health and global climate and some effective ways to remediate those problems at home. Guest presenter Stephen Reeves will describe how his work on state environmental policy with the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Christian Life Commission is supporting smart stewardship. The two will co-lead a class round table on global climate disruption, what to make of it, and best solutions.
