The Week in Review: Audible/Visible 4.8.2011

By Gabino Iglesias / Apr 8, 2011

This week the blogosphere had a lot to say. The folks at Earache! more than made up for their inactive weekend. They had a great review of Janet Jackson’s concert at the Moody Theatre. Here’s the verdict: “Jackson’s performance registered inversely proportional to her petite size and voice.” They also had a long post about bluegrass that, although I was skeptical about reading it all, actually turned out to be interesting and informative. Last but not least, they also had that varied treat that is Wednesday Rewind. Since Wednesday was the day of their last post, we’ll see if this weekend brings anything new.

The ladies at Chickster were back with their “Five Things We Love About This Week.” At the top of their list were the outside pianos that we told you about last week. Their encounter was similar to that of many Austinites: “In our opinion, running is pretty boring, even when you’re hoofing it around the beautiful Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. So when we noticed the pianos begging “Play Me, I’m Yours” on the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge and a few other spots, our run became a little more interesting.” The Stephen Colbert spoof of “Friday” (yes, I know what you’re thinking and I agree) also made their list, along with some alcohol and grammar. This week they also had a post about their favorite veggie burgers that made me, a life-long beef-eater, a tad hungry. I like this blog more and more every week. Could it be affecting my masculinity? I will have to ask them.

Covert Curiosity, an Austin Music Blog, somehow managed to get back on the subject of SXSW. I was very surprised as I thought that the last remnants of that had left the blogosphere last week. I was wrong. They had a post of their 15 favorite bands from SXSW. Here´s the list. Let us know if you agree: Deerhunter, Queens of the Stone Age, WhoMadeWho, Kurt Vile, Low, Secret Colours, Twin Shadow, Beats Antique, Lance Herbstrong, Portugal. The Man, The Night Beats, Thee Oh Sees, The Mighty Stef, The Lines and Colour Revolt. They also had a great review of Swedish songstress Lykke Li’s new album. Here is what they had to say: “If you haven't given it a spin, I highly recommend. While somber in content --somewhat of a breakup album-- there is a powerful, emotional tone at the core of these songs that can't be ignored.” Sounds like an invitation. Last but not least, they plugged the upcoming screenings of “Echotone” at the Alamo. I will be bringing you more about that soon.

Austin Music Source had a great review of Penn and Teller’s show, “Penn & Teller: 35 Years of Magic and B.S.” They also had great news. I’ll leave you with the self-explanatory headline: “Alamo Drafthouse cracking down on talkers at movies.” Hell yeah. Last but not least, they reviewed Lady Gaga’s concert at the Erwin Center: “If there was any doubt that Lady Gaga, who turned 25 last week, had the pure talent and jaw-dropping showmanship to hold a packed arena delirious and enrapt for two hours, that was put to rest Wednesday night at the Erwin Center.”

As you can see, it was a very active week in the blogosphere. Now let’s see what the weekend brings.
