Austin and Coal: The Dirtiest of Dirty Secrets?

Austin Supports MTR. MTR is "Mountain Top Removal" - the cheapest and most environmentally destructive way to extract coal. America currently gets 10 percent of its coal from MTR, aka "blowing up mountains." See Steven Colbert's description.

Austin & MTR. Currently, Austin's coal comes directly from strip mines in Wyoming (also pretty rough on the environment). However, note that Austin's strip-mined-coal is provided by companies that operate mountaintop removal mines in Appalachia. According to iLoveMountains.org, Austin's coal plant is one of only six in Texas connected to MTR. See Google Earth depiction.
