Craigslist Prostitutes: Lessons Not Learned
You order a hooker on Craigslist, and who shows up at the door? The hooker and two dudes with knives. Ooops.
I don't even completely trust Craigslist transactions involving gently-used IKEA sofas, so imagine the outpouring of sympathy I did not have when I read a story about a Cedar Park man who was robbed by a Craigslist "hooker" and her buddies.
It happened last Thursday morning, according to My Fox Austin.
Investigators learned that the victim had solicited a prostitute online using Cragislist. When the victim met the prostitute, she was accompanied by two men who produced a knife and robbed the victim of $480.
Suspect #1: black female, 5’9’ with short dark hair. She was last seen wearing a red shirt, blue jeans shorts, and white sandals.
Suspect #2: black male, 5’11” with short braided hair. He was last seen wearing a white or grey short sleeve t-shirt and silver watch. This suspect was armed with a knife.
Suspect #3: black male - no other information available.
The suspects were observed fleeing the scene in a black 4-door Honda Civic with tinted
windows.
Should he have been surprised? I think not. Should we have much sympathy for this man and his $480 loss? Nope.
Police departments and state governments are speaking out against the "adult services" section on the popular, free classified ads site. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and 16 other state attorney generals want that section removed completely...but how much will that really help? At the end of the day, the problem is rooted far deeper Craigslit. The online porn and sex industry isn't going anywhere but up. Add that to a bad economy where people are a little more desperate and mix in the common lack of common sense, and you have a problem that Craigslist, Greg Abbott and police departments can't really solve. We can't make people stop paying for sex, we can't censor the internet to make it harder for people to pay for sex and we certainly can't get people's hands out of each other's pockets. If anyone has any ideas on how to lower the crime rate associated with ordering sex online, please comment below.
In my opinion, the Fox story should have been called something more like this: "Complete moron surprised when robbed by Craigslist hooker."
