Measuring ACL's Green Power on 10/10 Weekend + MUST-SEE VIDEO

By Chris Searles / Oct 6, 2010

It's 10/10 weekend. That means people around the world are trying to get you more involved in fighting climate change. Here in Austin we've got two noteworthy events: i) GreenPeace's "Quit Coal, Texas" Rally, which takes place down the road from ACL 12 to 1pm, possibly climaxing with a march to festival grounds, and ii) "Power Plants Suck (lots & lots of water)" starring Butch Hancock and others 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Lake Travis. Both events are this Sunday.

So How Green Is ACL?
"The Austin City Limits Music Festival continues to be one of the most environmentally friendly events in the world." Really? Well, you have to click a bit, but I did find the following: onsite recycling, green travel recommendations, reusable container recommendations, and a way to add carbon offsets to ticket purchases. The fest also features a commerative H-E-B shopping bag, valuable facetime for three eco organizations, and an admirable, real-deal, money-where-their-mouth-is committment to the Austin Parks Foundation and Zilker Park. ($+2.3M donated since 2006.)

But, since it's 10/10 weekend, let's consider that Austin's dirty coal plant will be firing away all weekend to bring us hours of beautiful, electrified soul. Who doesn't want to see the Flaming Lips --- but isn't it time to get serious about where each of us stands, individually, on climate concerns?

Radiohead Thinks So
Radiohead added the soundtrack at the end of this controversial, 10/10 weekend video. Enjoy!

"Controversial" does not seem a strong enough term to describe that 10/10 video. It is reprehensible.

Yes, I found it disturbing - which was the point obviously - and I think it weakens the goals of the movement. It was just too creepy.

thanks Karie -- does the fact that the vid was written by the guy who wrote: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones's Diary, Notting Hill, Love Actually, and britcoms Blackadder, Mr. Bean, and The Vicar of Dibley, change anything? (Richard Curtis, also the founder of the British charity Comic Relief.)

thanks SnowedIn, appreciate your comment

Chris, Dont forget that Texas Solar Power Co. has installed a ~10kW PV system in the park. I know it is not much but it should go on your list. :) Casey

hey cool -- i had no idea! good seeing you tonight bro

Wow - I am definitely surprised. I mean, I'm all for black comedy, but I did find this particularly creepy. I just think it's a video that preaches to the choir and wouldn't be effective on someone who wasn't inclined to do anything about climate change. Thanks for posting as always!
