Observations from Austin Energy's Town Hall meeting

By Chris Searles / Sep 29, 2009

Roger Duncan -- a true genius in energy planning and Austin Energy's excellent General Manager, said some very interesting things at a Town Hall meeting last Wednesday concerning our utility's next 10 years...

(paraphrased)

1. "Wind is the cheapest electricity available"
2. "One day Austin will be solar-powered by its rooftops"
3. "We don't need coal to keep the lights on"
4. "It's probably not going to be difficult to get out of the coal plant"

He also said:

5. "You can't get clean, reliable, and affordable all at once"

Re: #5, really?

Mr. Duncan knows a lot more about this than I do. He's a world leader in this area and his service to Austin over the last several decades has done immeasurably great things for making our community what it is. Indeed, great Austinites like Roger have made it easy for enviros like me to expect more. Thank you Mr. Duncan, thank you COA & Austin Energy, and thank you Austin for getting us this far. Now I wonder -- if burning coal is causing health & environmental crises, and clean is cheaper and/or cost competitive to coal -- why can't we do more?

I hope this is sarcasm. Points 1 and 2 are abject nonsense. The Statesman reported we are paying $9.50 for power that should cost $3.60. 99% of the Green Energy program is unsold. Did they serve Kool-aid at this event?

Hi Freedoms, Thanks for writing in. Actually, it's my understanding that Austin's Green Choice program was sorely overpriced, until VERY recently. A good source to trace that controversy: http://powersmack.org/greenchoice/ Key Points: 1. ALL other clean energy programs in TX were lower-priced than Austin Energy's ... until a few weeks ago. (the link above helped get that word out. AE lowered prices immediately.) 2. Both the US Department of Energy & The Texas Public Utility Commission support the idea that Austin Energy was overcharging. (see source info, via link) 3. The link asserts that Austin Energy was "overcharging" for most recent batch of clean power -- thus subscriptions declined sharply. (My take: those people willing to pay a premium have already signed up... but... now there's no need to pay more. Roger Duncan, GM @ Austin Energy confirmed that wind is the cheapest electiricty source at last week's Town Hall.) Hope this makes sense and that you take a good look at everything on the link. Thanks for your comments. Send more, Chris Searles
