Topless Women Topple Austin

By karie / Aug 21, 2010

On Sunday, August 22 at 12 p.m., the corner of Sixth St. and Congress Ave. will be full of bare breasts.

Tomorrow is Go Topless Day around the country, a day when women protest the fact that men can go topless in public, but women can't.

Austin doesn't have an ordinance against women going topless in public, unlike the majority of Texas cities. Gotopless.org hopes that the protest on Sunday will help other Texas cities repeal their ban on ordinances that prevent women from going topless in public.

"We are encouraging the women of Austin to exercise their topless rights and denounce these unconstitutional ordinances discriminating against women throughout Texas," stated on the web site.

So, will you be there? Do you think women should be able to walk around topless just like men? I plan to check it out...but I'll be keeping my top on.

Can't wait to hear about it. You absolutely have to "cover" it!

Such laws are uncostitutional and won't stand u to a court challenge

Karie, are you covering the uncovering?

Sounds udderly fantastic! What mammaries are made of...

I hope the women don't get "pinched" by the cops.

While I'm certainly no opponent of equal rights between the sexes, and women wearing what they want, take a closer look at who's behind this. The Gotopless protest campaign is part of the "Raelian Movement", which is a UFO cult started by a French guy who went crazy in the 70s and started calling himself Rael and claiming that life on earth was created by aliens. There have got to be better ways of promoting the respectability of female torsos than aligning with this sort of group.

Who cares who is sponsoring it, it's still a value equal rights point. I personally live in a place that's really hot out, almost year round. It's always pissed me off that men were allowed to run around shirtless, yet women were left to suffer the heat, without this freedom. You see it all over every city park, all summer long. Not fair. Yeah, it's a little odd where the support is coming from...but we also have freedom of religion in this country that needs to be respected, regardless of your opinion of it.
