The American south has a long history with the destruction of churches. The next church to get demolished against its parishioners’ wishes may be a Sikh temple in Bee Caves.
According to an Austin-American Statesman article and the Road to Khalistan blog, the whole saga goes something like this: A Sikh group had been meeting outdoors in a trailer home on their property in Bee Caves. They presented plans for a more permanent Sikh temple to the neighborhood association, and when nobody objected, they started to build it. That’s when they got sued by some new neighbors on the grounds of deed restrictions. The Sikh temple won the initial trial, but the neighbors appealed and won. The Sikh temple is appealing again, but if they lose, they face having their place of worship torn down.
Admittedly, I haven’t had much contact with Sikh’s personally. After watching Singh is King I read the Wikipedia entry on Sikhism several times and I still don’t understand what the religion is about, but it definitely seems like a serious religion with thoughtful followers. So I’m sure that the neighbors who want to destroy the Sikh temple have some very good reasons to do so, besides just a faith in the finer points of real estate contract law. For instance, they may want to increase their property value. Or maybe they want to keep Bee Caves the dullest, most homogenized place on Earth. I mean there’s no point in the sort of multiculturalism and weirdness you find in Austin.
