Review: Sherlock Holmes
I have to admit, I wasn't entirely enthused about this one. I mean, Sherlock Holmes was a big deal a hundred years ago, but today seems a little ... I don't know ... outdated. It's not like we're lacking for murder mysteries in modern cinema, and to do a period mystery sounds terribly boring.
But I trust Robert Downey, Jr. completely, and although I have mixed thoughts about Guy Ritchie, his penchant for violence, witty dialogue, and rapid cuts did wonders to update this concept for a modern audience.
The adaptation was truly a stroke of genius. It wasn't a straight adaptation at all, but a complete modernization in period form. The heroes aren't just intellectuals; they're fighters, pounding their enemies with their fists and their wits, like Indiana Jones, but with their flaws showing up in their character, rather than in their physical prowess.
I could blabber on, but you've already read as much as you want to know. The movie kicks ass. It's pretty cool to see a 19th century mystery turned into an action adventure.Do yourself a favor and go see it.
