Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones, Josh Homme

When the Beastie Boys dropped out of the Austin City Limits 2009 line up people were wondering what band would replace them. In come the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and then the announcement that Them Crooked Vultures will do an ACL Pre Show at Stubb's and a Friday October 2nd ACL set. If you are not familiar with Them Crooked Vultures you are not alone. They are drummer Dave Grohl (from Nirvana and Foo Fighters), John Paul Jones on bass and keyboards (Led Zeppelin) and Josh Homme on guitar (Queens of The Stone Ages).

Since I am not a music critic, but a photographer I will not go into the historical rock-n-roll Dave Grohlnuances one can discuss for each of these phenomenal artists. This show at Stubb's was the Austin City Limits Festival Pre Show. The show was sold out weeks in advance. When I picked up my photo pass I was presented with a special photo release contract detailing the legal conditions for allowing me to take photographs. The audience was warned not to take pictures with their cell phones or they could be confiscated.

Although each of the band members has had a great career, it is amazing how this band with no CDs, downloads or concert tours can be so pretentious. I can only suppose that their marketing team has decided that secrecy breeds curiosity which in turn sells tickets! There were no less than fourteen photographers in the photo-pit, standing shoulder to shoulder two rows deep. We were allowed to take pictures for two songs, not the standard three songs and then we would have to leave the venue with our cameras.

Once the show started Dave Grohl gave an unbelievable show. His fantastic rhythms and unbelievable power as he pounds out the beats is both frightening and awesome. One day he is going to demolish one of his drums on stage with his brute force and energy. Maybe his drum sets are reinforced? Since they have not released any music on line or on CD it is very difficult to appreciate the songs. To hear something for the first time in a concert setting is not the most ideal and rewarding experience. My impression, and that of many other people I have talked to during the past few days, is that this group is way "over sold". You leave the show wondering whether you liked it or not which is truly a bad sign.
John Paul Jones
Maybe this "super group" will go the same way as other super groups and quietly disappear into the dark after spending millions of dollars on tours and promotions.

Manuel, as a photographer, I am wondering why you would consider the stipulations placed on press as restrictive? It doesn't seem unusual for a band to ask for limited photography at a specific event. The restrictions were on the show @ Stubbs, not @ the ACL festival ... and while the restrictions were harsh, they're certainly not unusual. Also, the FIRST rule of photography is to never "flip horizontal" on a live action shot of musicians (first photo). JPJ and Josh Homme are right-handed. You immediately lose credibility (as a photographer and a journalist) when posting a photo that is so obviously manipulated. Truly a bad sign, indeed.
| william j. |

William, thanks for the comment, and welcome to the world of new media. I see you are are a highly educated person "instructor of Web Design and Interactive Media at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and will be pursuing a Ph.D. in Media Studies at the University of Texas at Austin beginning in Fall, 2009" as you post on your web page. We need more people like you looking out for failing photographers like me. FYI, the photo was flipped because of the page layout where my Head Shot would be covering part of Josh Homme. I did link to the gallery where the correct horizontal is displayed! Check it out, maybe you can find more issues and tell me if I also failed the SECOND and THIRD rule of photography? BTW, I googled a bit and could not find any pictures you posted on the web? What artists, shows have you photographed? Cheers! Manuel Nauta

William, one more thing. You are incorrect about ACL "The restrictions were on the show @ Stubbs, not @ the ACL festival" I was taking photos for SPIN (yes, me the failing photographer) and we had to be screened 2x for pit access. First our name was selected for approval in addition to our photo credentials, second we had to sign release again and wear additional identification just prior to the show. Where you in the photo pit? I must have missed you.

I'm not a photographer. I'm a fan of accuracy in photography (hence, the "media studies" bit). And I was referencing the restrictions on fan photography. Of course the press would have to endure screening; otherwise, hacks like me would be able to get into the press area and make a mockery of the art of photography. I was just there to enjoy the show @ ACL and watch two world-class, left-handed guitarists do their thing.

Now that The Austinpost has changed it's formating, where the image of the writer is no longer covering part of the photo, I have replaced the pic with the non-flipped version :)
