In my last article I mentioned how my nipples get hard getting turbo-Christians into an uproar. That really wasn’t me talking. It was Neal Boortz (http://boortz.com/).
Neal who?
Neal Boortz is the most entertaining and smartest person on radio. Don’t argue with me, its a fact. He has a national radio audience of over 4 million and is a best selling author.
He is also a Libertarian and proud of it. He proudly and prominently promotes the Libertarian Party. I particularly love it when he tears up Democrats and Republicans, though he spends a bit more time spanking the left than the right.
However, when he spanks the right he takes it to an art form. He loves getting hate mail from outraged Christians. That’s why he talks about his nipple texture and throws around the turbo-Christian label.
However, he is also very fair. Does he have opinions? Heck yeah! But if he gets it wrong he admits it. He isn’t wrong often.
But when I think he is wrong, I don’t mind mentioning it. The first time I called him on the air was to debate him on the war in Iraq. He was doing his show from College Station and had a partisan crowd behind him as I defended the foreign policy of Ron Paul. Neal feels a policy of intervention conveys strength and a policy on non-intervention conveys weakness. We had a spirited discussion and agreed to disagree.
I have called him a few other times, including this episode that I managed to capture. These days he is so popular you can rarely get through on a phone line.
Although I have some areas of disagreement with Neal, we fundamentally have agreement on core beliefs. A particular initiative of Neal’s that I support is the FairTax. There are quite a few Libertarians who are skeptical of the FairTax, but I believe it to be a very practical means of ending the abusive IRS and arcane income tax code.
Another set of people Neal likes to spank are those that can’t provide for themselves. Most of us look with empathy on those who have fallen on hard times. Neal does not coddle these people. A cold slap in the face and a dose of reality is his prescription to get people to take responsibility for their own condition. It can be a harsh message, but often more effective than coddling.
All of this has earned Neal a spot in the radio hall of fame. This is a pretty big deal and Neal is understandably proud of it.
Here in Austin the big talk radio station is 590 AM KLBJ I used to listen to Neal on KLBJ. I say used to because KLBJ seems to have done their best to screw up their schedule. It used to be you could listen to Neal in the mornings and call in live. During this period KLBJ would hold an annual TalkFest and invite Neal to the convention center to host a show in front of a huge crowd. Well, KLBJ decided to boot Neal to a diminished time slot and try various other shows in its place. Looks like they are all failing. I don’t know what Mark Caesar is thinking, but I presume he knows more about radio programming than I. Why you would take airtime away from a hall of famer with the sharpest and funniest wit to make room for others than can’t cut it is beyond me.
If KLBJ doesn’t want him anymore, the Libertarian Party does. We will have him at our national convention in St. Louis next May. I expect there will be a few Libertarians protesting his appearance because of disagreement on the war. Neal loves it.
I like Neal simply because he is genuine. He is not a cheerleader like many other talk show hosts. You know where he stands and he gives it to you straight. The fact that he is entertaining, funny, and a Libertarian is a bonus, but I would rather spend my time with someone that is being honest than someone giving me talking points to boost their ratings.
So if you feel up to it, congratulate Neal for earning his place in the radio hall of fame. If you really want to make him happy, send him some hate mail. That will make his nipples hard.

It's nice to know that some libertarians support the FairTax! I tend to be more Libertarian minded than anything else, and have had extensive discussions over the FairTax with my friends. They mostly have trouble with it's weakening of Federalism and giving more power to the national government.
I'm with you Pat; the FairTax is infinitely better than our current tax system, the IRS, and everything else that goes along with it.
To anyone interested in learning more about the FairTax, I recommend two books co-authored by Neal Boortz:
http://www.amazon.com/FairTax-Book-Neal-Boortz/dp/0060875410
http://www.amazon.com/FairTax-Answering-Critics-Neal-Boortz/dp/B0027CSNO...
The first one explains, the second defends against all the challenges levied against the first.

I've never heard of Neal before. Thanks, Pat. You and Robert make the point that diversity among Libertarians is good and I completely agree - let the other two parties eat their young!
