Animal Lovers Get Fancy for New Shelter

Next weekend, animal lovers who enjoy cocktail hours and have at least $75 to burn can throw some money at the City of Austin’s new animal shelter while touring the building that will replace the Town Lake Animal Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7 to 10 p.m., the new Austin Animal Center on Levander Loop will host “The Green Gala”a gala and cocktail hour to benefit the new center. The ‘green’ part is a name check for the LEED certification and green building at the new center, which have been bragged on by the city ahead of the official Nov. 12 grand opening. The money they raise will be used to by new veterinary equipment for the new shelter, and also to support ongoing efforts at the shelter such as vaccination clinics and adoption drives.

If you’re a celebrity spotter and you were a fan of supernatural primetime shows like “Charmed” back in the 90s, you also might find it kinda cool that you can party down at the event with actress Holly Marie Combs (as much as you can party down at a gala held at an animal shelter.) Combs has been the face of the Animal Centers’ campaign this summer as the city works to reach it’s no-kill city goals.

Of course, the Friends of the Town Lake Animal Center are putting on the event, and Council Member Mike Martinez is going to be “honorary chair” of the gala.

The food will be locally sourced and the tunes will come from The Hot Club of Cowtown.

Tickets range from $75 for a ticket just to the gala, up to $5,000 for a 10 person table. Check out the details and buy tickets online.

Get ready for a Pop-Culture-Palooza this weekend! We have a premier party for the return of Doctor Who, a premier party for the return of Game of Thrones, and a chance to pitch in and help build the only 1:1 replica Star Wars Starfighter in America. Along the way, there’s also LARPing, gaming, and plenty of other geeky get togethers.
