Bona Dea Bread: A Bread Lover's Dream
There is new bread in town. After living in Germany for over a decade, Lauren Hubele knows good bread. And now, she's using that experience to bring great bread to her newly-adopted home here in Austin. Bona Dea Bread is baking old world sourdough (with a “real” German sourdough mother) whole grain breads with an East Austin flair. The breads are available as 6" Rustic Rounds in a variety of flavors, including rye or rye with fennel and anise, walnut with raisin, semolina with rosemary, whole wheat and whole wheat with kalamata olives.
Presently these breads can only be purchased through www.BonaDeaBread.com but actually receiving them couldn’t be easier. Lauren delivers the bread to “drop-off” homes in several Austin neighborhoods and can picked up on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings. Presently there are drop-off points in Cherrywood, Mueller, East Austin (Springdale / 12th), Travis Heights, Bouldin, Zilker, Clarksville, Allendale, and Rosedale. Breads change routinely but the favorites will never go away.
I have tried most of Lauren’s breads (and scones). I am very particular about my bread so much so that I remove my veggie burgers from anything puffy or even slightly white. My experience with Bona Dea has been nothing less than delightful. The bread tastes delicious and makes me feel like I am adding value to my digestive system. The texture is unsurpassed and it is down-right wholesome. Honestly, it really is the best bread I have had in Austin.
If you don’t like hearty wholesome bread, this is not for you but if you crave healthy fiber and whole ingredients, I’m not sure you can do better.
