Austin Air Sex

By Joe_Holloway / Jun 7, 2010

Fans of the Oxygen Network's "Bad Girls Club" might recognize Chris Trew. He was featured on a couple episodes of the reality series for his affiliation with the “Air Sex World Championships,” which he hosts. He was the guy who looked like a Moses with glasses and kept humping the air.

Chris Trew’s air sex display was good enough to inspire some the pretty good looks of disgust from the members of the Bad Girls Club and some interesting responses on the Internet after the show. The Austin-based comedian incorporates clips of both into his hour-long comedy special “A Celebration of the Unremarkable,” that opened at the New Movement Theater in East Austin on Friday night.

There are still two shows left. Chris Trew will do one at the theater on Friday at 8 p.m. and another on Saturday at the same time. Both shows are $5 and, overall, are worth it.

This isn’t an hour of comedy like one might expect though. Those raised on the traditional stand up of Comedy Central specials with a guy and a microphone might wonder where they are and what they’re seeing for the first few sections of the show. After a while though, one comes to grips with the fact that Chris Trew’s brand of humor relies more heavily reliant on ridiculousness and turning the mundane into something out of the ordinary.

Whether he’s taking the stage in a spandex wrestling outfit, reading aloud the rap songs he composed in an old green notebook during his high school English class or showing a short film by his comedy troupe (studio 8) on the projector, Chris Trew’s show is funny on the whole.

One of the funniest parts is this video called “Uncle Terry.”

CAUTION: This is the exact same video that he shows so it might be a bit of a spoiler, but if Chris Trew’s going to have it on YouTube it might as well be spoiled. Also, don’t watch if heavily offended by fully clothed “air sex.”

Even if you did watch this video, it's be no means the only funny part of Chris Trew's show so it's definitely still worth the whole $5 you'd have to spend to get in. You might not be rolling the whole show, but you'll probably keep a grin on your face the whole time. Just prepare yourself for something a little different.

If there's a big downside to the show its that the New Movement Theater apparently lacks an air conditioner robust enough to keep the tiny venue cool when it's full of people, assuming it has one at all. On the bright side, however, people were handed free cold bottled water to help cope with the oppressive heat.

More info on the events can be found at Chris Trew's website, terp2it.com, or at the New Movement Theater website, newmovementtheater.com.
