Blues Legend Mart Sammon and the Texas Suitcase play Jax

By stevenblythe / Dec 3, 2010

Marty Sammon, Irish-American by descent and Chicago bluesman by choice, was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, where he started out learning traditional Irish songs by ear. Listening to records with his father, Martin Sr., led him on a journey into many styles of music.

At the age of 15, the blues hit Sammon, and he began playing with South Side guitarist L.V. Banks and he absorbed the sound and language of Chicago  blues.

Marty quickly began receiving calls to play with many Chicago artists. One artist in particular that excited him was Mr. Phil Guy, the younger brother of Buddy Guy --

Perhaps this is where we get the funky, heavy, soulful blues language that is Marty Sammon.

Sammon is currently branching out, recording other talent at his home studio. But don’t worry,  he assures us, he’s collaborating and working on his own stuff as well: "Right now, I've got some great Irish cats, some blues guys, and some good friends laying down stuff in my home studio. It's great to do something at the house for a change!" In addition, he’s on his way to Austin.

Check out this clip with him and Buddy Guy, then go to Jax Neighborhood Café and see the greatness that is Marty Sammon, as he plays with the Texas Suitcase!

I consider myself the offspring of the Atlanta music scene during the 1990's. After 2 years dividing my time between Seattle and Antartica, and 4 in Hawaii, I am now currently content to remain in the anonymous periphery of the Houston and Austin music scenes. Thus, I rescue this world from the excruciating pain of one more guy with a guitar and minimal talent.
