Jeff Lofton Takes On Cole Porter

By Gabino Iglesias / Oct 28, 2011

The last time local jazzman Jeff Lofton graced the stage at the iconic Cactus Cafe it was for a sold-out Antonio Jobim tribute in August. Now Lofton returns to the same stage on Saturday, Oct. 29, for a show titled "Jeff Lofton Plays Cole Porter." As always, the music of this great composer will get an amazing treatment by one of Austin's most innovative creators.

"From the beginning of his popularity as a songwriter, and his show and film music, Cole Porter's music has had the complexity of chord structure and deep, melodic clarity that jazz musicians appreciate," said Lofton. "As a lyricist his words have graced the lips of all the great jazz singers from Lady Day to Tony Bennett, and without the Cole Porter songbook, the loss to jazz would be incalculable."

For this concert, the Jeff Lofton Quartet will feature Dr. James Polk on keys, Chris Jones on bass, and Andy Beaudoin on drums If you want to check out what Lofton did with Porter's work, drop by the Cactus Cafe at 8:00 p.m. You can get your tickets here

While you're at it, don't forget to check out "A Swingin' Trio," a movie that screened during the Austin Film Festival and which features Lofton in trio form. Lat but not least, check out Dean Lofton's, Jeff's wife, website here. Her writing workshops for women are so great that I'm considering sneaking in with a wig and a little eye shadow.
