Your Weekend Music Bucket List 8.5.2011

By Gabino Iglesias / Aug 5, 2011

Friday is finally here and with it comes a ton of great music that ranges from ska to jazz and everything in between. If you want to know what the best options are, take a few minutes off and, just like every week, check out the names below.

Friday

1. For many years I heard great piano music from Bob James because it was one of my father's favorites. Now I get a chance to recommend him, along with guitarist Chuck Loeb, drummer Harvey Mason and bassist Nathan East. This amazingly talented foursome, known as Fourplay, will be playing at the One World Theatre at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. You can get your tickets here.

2. Los Skarnales last rocked Austin when they came to play Pachanga Fest in May. If you didn't catch them then, now's your chance: they'll be playing at Flamingo Cantina at 9:00 p.m. $10 at the door for music that will make you shake, drink and jump.

3. Perennial music bucket list member Mike Milligan will be doing his bluesy thing once again at the Anderson Mill Tavern at 9:00 p.m.

Saturday

1. W.C. Clark is one of Austin's biggest names when it comes to blues. You can catch this local hero live at Central Market North at 6:30 p.m.

2. Few local bands rock as hard as Megafauna. If you enjoy headbanging and heavy guitar work, this is the band for your. They'll be playing Club De Ville at 8:00 p.m.

3. Another local band that seems to pop into this list once in a while is White Ghost Shivers. They're like an amazing-sounding circus of happiness. Catch them live at Beerland at 9:00 p.m.

Sunday

1. After the jazz on Friday, the One World Theatre receives singer, songwriter and guitarist Roger McGuinn, founder of the legendary The Byrds and author of such classics as "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Mr. Tambourine Man," McGuinn is a certified star. The show is at 7:00 p.m. and you can get your tickets here.

2. Jeff Lofton is Austin's own Miles Davis. With that introduction, the only thing left to do is for you to check out this gifted trumpet player at the Waterloo Ice House at 11:00 a.m.

3. The third spot goes to a combination of folks I really enjoy: Jon Dee Graham and Hayes Carll. You can catch these two guys at the Continental Club at 8:30 p.m.
