The Jesus Lizard Dives Into Fun Fun Fun 2009

The Jesus Lizard on Friday November 7th might just be the most memorable show of the festival. On stage were Austin natives David Yow and David Sims in front of a huge crowd of friends, family and fans together with the rest of The Lizard. He must have staged dived 20 times before the night was over, he deserves an Olympic Gold medal for diving!

Les Savy Fav French Kissed The Audience

Les Savy Fav, Tim Harrington at Fun Fun Fun 2009 - photo by Manuel NautaThis was a "one act circus according to Tim Harrington" at FUN FUN FUN 2009. There was the lizard mask, wedding dress, finger paint in both red and brown, blue underwear complimented by purple hose, a gigantic bouncing beer gut and white gloves. Not to be forgotten was the pink scarf Tim wrapped around his head, as the scarf covered his face he blew hard into it to have it protrude forward into some phallic manner. Did I mention he crawled into the crowed and french kissed a dude! Oh yes, there was music also, Seth Jabour, Harrison Haynes, Syd Butler, and Andrew Reuland seemed amazingly calm and understated as they rocked on while Tim was frolicking around with his finger paint.

 Melt Banana Goes Germ Free

If you like your noise-rock from an electronic box, hard, fast, loud and protected by a surgical mask, you will love Melt Banana from Japan. They rip through one song after the other with precision and passion. Once the music stops, you do feel like a Melt Banana. I think that you will hear a lot more from these guys in the future.

Foot Patrol Celebrates Funky Foot Fetish

In between the intense noise-rock and electronic punk there was Foot Patrol at FUN FUN Fun 2009. A entertaining brand of soulful funk with whimsical foot fetish lyrics. This Austin band is made up of Hung Nguyen, TJ Wade, Austin Schell, Jeff Hoskins, Kerim Peirce, Rick Redman, and Nick Smith.

Death Delivers Proto-Punk

Brothers Bobby, David, and Dannis Hackney make up the band Death Now called proto-punk style, these guys were already a Detroit punk garage band before punk exploded on the scene in the late 70's. This is vintage punk, I hope that ACL takes notice and books these guys next year, a MUST see band. The show started late because of technical dificulties and becuase they had to borrow an amp from another stage. The crowed much anticipated this performance and it delivered! There is a great article about this legendary band by Mike Rubin in The New York Times  (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/15/arts/music/15rubi.html).

Yeasayer Brings Out The Light Show

Fun Fun Fun festival bands are not know for their stage light shows, however Yeasayer brought out the fog machines and colored lights to complement their 'Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel' musics. Yeasayers are Anand Wilder, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Luke Fasano and proclaim to live in a world with crystal towers with people wearing purple robes. I loved the show, nothing like some calming electro pop after a busy festival day.
