TABC Approves New Four Loko
Here’s some good news for Four Loko fans: the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) has approved Four Loko’s non-caffeine formula.
This after last month’s conclusion by the Food and Drug Administration that caffeine added in malt beverages including beer, ale and malt liquor is unsafe and a public health concern. TABC then asked the members of the alcoholic beverage industry to stop selling their caffeinated alcoholic drinks on November 19th.
Four Loko’s manufacturer Phusion Projects had already announced its intent to reformulate the product on November 16th, stating that they have decided to remove caffeine, guarana and taurine from their products as part of their steps in producing non-caffeinated energy drinks.
TABC’s approval of Four Loko’s new version is hopefully the first of many, as there are still some products, like Lemon Lime Core Spiked, which have not yet re-entered the market. TABC has also announced pending approval of reformulated versions of Cold Springs’ Crunk, Joose and Core.
