Ice Cream Social
Ice Cream Social picked a good time of year to launch a new ice cream trailer located conveniently close to Barton Springs. Their in-house ice cream comes in artisanal flavors, and they serve fresh Italian sodas.
Located in the Jessie Street Eats trailer park behind Thom’s Grocery on Barton Springs Road, the trailer is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 10 p.m., covering the hottest hours of the day. They’re also open Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
My friend Jenny and I stopped by for dessert Friday afternoon. Since we couldn’t decide on just one flavor a piece, we each ordered two scoops, plus one peach Italian soda to share that was fizzy and tasted of fresh fruit.
Jenny ordered a combination of tres leches ice cream and one of their weekly specials, a vegan ice cream with cinnamon, molasses and vanilla roasted pecans. The tres leches ice cream was simple and rich, as you’d expect, but the vegan special really stood out. It had an additional coconut flavor from coconut milk, and it mixed nicely with the big chunks of roasted pecans.
I ordered a scoop of the roasted strawberry cheesecake, which was sweet, fruity and creamy, and a scoop of the peanut butter mole. The peanut butter mole ice cream was complex. At first bite, it tasted just like smooth peanut butter in ice cream form, but it was followed by a strong kick from the mole that stayed in my mouth. Combining the strawberry cheesecake and peanut butter mole turned out to be the best decision, as the sweet, salty and spicy flavors all coalesced into a cool refresher on a hot day.
Next time I visit, I'll add some toppings to the mix, including cardamom toasted coconut and chocolate dipped bacon.
